The Shanghai Science and Technology Awards were established by the Shanghai Municipal Government to honor original innovation in scientific discoveries and technological invention and major scientific as well as technological achievements that promote ecological development and transformation of economic development modes, nurture strategic industries, strengthen urban security, improve ecological development and advance the innovative development of districts and counties. The awards are in six categories: the science and technology meritorious worker award, the award for youth making outstanding contributions to science and technology, the natural science award, the technical invention award, the science and technology advancement award, and the international scientific and technological cooperation award.
The natural science award, the technical invention award, the science and technology advancement award, and the international scientific and technological cooperation award are appraised once a year and are classified into three grades: first-class, second-class and third-class awards. The grand award is given to a citizen or organization that has made extraordinary significant scientific discovery or technological invention, or that has made outstanding contributions to a science and technology task, plan, or project of special significance.
Shanghai Tower won the 2018 grand prize at the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards ceremony held in May 2019.
