Shanghai Tower Holds Inaugural ESG Report Release Ceremony and Sustainable Development Forum
2024-12-05
On the morning of December 5, a zero-carbon conference titled "A Low-Carbon Journey Toward a Better Future—Shanghai Tower Inaugural ESG Report Release Ceremony and Sustainable Development Forum" was held at Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China. Over 100 attendees, including government officials, experts, and industry representatives, participated. The event marked the release of Shanghai Tower's inaugural ESG Report, showcasing its key initiatives, practices, and progress in environmental, social, and governance domains.
Green Pioneer Above the Cloud
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Global Compact's introduction of the Environment, Society, and Governance (ESG) concept. In recognition of this milestone, Shanghai Tower has declared 2024 as its "ESG Foundation Year" and released its first ESG Report on December 5, coinciding with the 17th anniversary of its operating company. This dual significance makes the report release a momentous achievement. At the ceremony, Shanghai Tower emphasized its role as the tallest building in China, highlighting its adherence to President Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization. Upholding President Xi Jinping's guidance, the tower remains committed to "green, smart, and people-centered" operations. It has consistently dedicated to becoming a practitioner and leader of sustainable development among skyscrapers. Fully recognizing its responsibility to elevate sustainability standards within the industry, Shanghai Tower has made significant commitments to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. At the same time, this represents a governance practice of a state-owned enterprise adhering to the "Two Consistents" principle, a key initiative to accelerate the building of a world-class enterprise, and an important driver for leading high-quality corporate development.
The first ESG report of Shanghai Tower is based on the ESG practices of Shanghai Tower in 2023. It focuses on the ESG practices of skyscrapers, the integration of "sustainable building operations" and "ESG concepts," and "ESG practices" and relevant demonstrations for the reference of buildings, demonstrating the ESG development achievements of Shanghai Tower in recent years, especially in improving its operational efficiency and governance capabilities.
The report consists of seven chapters: the opening section, "Shanghai and a World in the Sky"; two featured sections, "Green Pioneer Above the Cloud" and "Advocate of Value at the Top of the City"; and four main chapters, "Lead the Co-Creation of a Sustainable Vertical Ecosystem," "Engage in Building a Harmonious Community Together," "A Shared Strategy for Lean Governance," and "Deliver a Shared Vision for a Better Future." Together, the chapters systematically present Shanghai Tower's achievements and distinctive practices in the ESG field. Notably, the first letters of the English titles from the last four chapters form the acronym "L·E·A·D" (L: Low-Carbon Initiatives; E: Engagement; A: Ascending; D: Dedication), signifying Shanghai Tower's commitment to becoming a model and leader in green, low-carbon, and smart building practices.
Green Partnerships in Action
Shanghai Tower's recent achievements in sustainable development have been exceptional. In September this year, it earned the highest Platinum rating in China's first Low Carbon Office Building certification. This honor was officially presented by the certifying authority during a dedicated event.
Shanghai Tower not only prioritizes its own sustainable practices but also actively summarizes its experiences and methodologies, collaborates with a diverse range of stakeholders, and promotes sustainability advancements within its vertical community and the broader industry. It has signed a cooperation agreement with CPIC Xintiandi Commercial Center to jointly develop a carbon neutrality exhibition hall through operational management partnership. Regarding vertical community engagement, Shanghai Tower, together with tenant representatives BNP Paribas and NIO, signed the Green Partnership Initiative during the event.
Envisioning a Sustainable Future
During the event, representatives from Shanghai Tower, industry experts, and tenant representatives engaged in lively discussions on trending ESG topics. Experts widely recognized Shanghai Tower as a model of sustainable development practice for skyscrapers, highlighted the significance of its first ESG report as a guiding example for the industry, and expressed strong confidence in Shanghai Tower's future ESG practices.
The event itself was held as a "zero-carbon conference." Shanghai Tower waived its right under the CCER (China Certified Emission Reduction) program for greenhouse gas emissions generated by the conference, and was awarded a Carbon Neutrality Certificate by the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange. Additionally, carbon-reduction considerations permeated event arrangements: reusable cups replaced bottled water for drinking services, e-ink seating cards took the place of traditional paper cards, and digital reports eliminated printed copies.
The conference attendees also visited the Exhibition of Shanghai Tower's Achievement in Construction and Operations, hosted in the B2 Art Gallery of the building. The exhibition presented more than 100 carefully selected photos, mainly showcasing Shanghai Tower's successful construction, operations, innovative development, people-centered community development, and green practices under the guidance of President Xi Jinping's vision of a "people's city" and "green, smart, and people-centered" development.
